Series Format, Tone
"End of the Line" takes a unique approach to storytelling by featuring an ensemble cast of six main characters. While it deviates from the traditional soap opera format, the series embraces an anthology structure that introduces new guest characters in each episode. These guests, often patients at Sunrise Hospice, along with their loved ones and associates, bring fresh narratives and engage with the regular cast. The show delves into the personal, interpersonal, and spiritual challenges faced by both the guests and the main characters, resulting in compelling storylines that often intertwine. A persistent source of tension revolves around Roy Downs, the hospice director, as he confronts the constant battle of securing City funding for the Clinic amidst the skepticism of city officials regarding the clinic's distinctive mission.
